DJI Osmo Action 3 Overview
Last year’s Osmo Action 2 had a main camera unit that was very compact and could be mounted to other modules. This year, the design of the DJI Osmo Action 3 camera goes back to the original Osmo Action of 2019.
The DJI Osmo Action 3 is the first action camera to have dual touchscreens. The front screen measures 1.4 inches and has a square aspect ratio, whereas the 2.25-inch rear camera is larger and has a rectangular aspect ratio.
The screens and lens cover are protected by unspecified Corning Gorilla Glass, which should save the screen from a drop of up to 1.5m, according to DJI.
The Action 3 has a quick-release design with magnets and notches that instantly and securely clips the camera to mounts and accessories. There is now also a new Horizontal-Vertical Protective Frame that has the same quick-mounting system for vertical shooting, which is popular due to social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
The camera is IP68 certified and also is waterproof up to 16m without Waterproof Case and waterproof up to 60m with Waterproof Case.
Similar to last year, it has a 12MP 1/1.7-inch CMOS camera sensor. It has an f/2.8 aperture lens and a field of view of 155-degree. The camera sensor can shoot up to 4K video at 120fps and up to 1080p at 240fps.
DJI says that the Action 3 has an improved heat management system that prevents it from overheating, enabling continuous 4K/60fps recording until the battery runs out of power. The Pro mode also has DJI’s D-Cinelike color profile for more flexibility while editing post-production.
Action 3 has all three of DJI’s EIS (electronic image stabilization) options available in its predecessor: RockSteady 3.0, HorizonSteady, and HorizonBalancing.
The Osmo Action 3 features three-mic stereo recording for better wind noise reduction and audio quality. It can livestream using Wi-Fi up to 1080p at 30fps. The action camera also supports UAC/UVC webcam for video calls and livestreams.
A press of the Quick Switch button on the action camera allows users to switch between five user-created camera modes. It also has voice-activated informational and control features called Voice Prompt and Voice Control.
There is also the InvisiStick feature that digitally hides the selfie stick in snow-based activities like skiing and snowboarding. The Adventure Combo also comes with a Multifunctional Battery Case that stores and fast charges three batteries, and can be used as a power bank to charge devices like a smartphone. The case also has a space for two microSD cards.
The DJI action camera can be connected to the DJI Mimo smartphone app via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The app features various story templates, quick in-app editing, a live camera feed, and more. Additionally, the LightCut video editor app is designed for use with Action 3.
Furthermore, there are various dedicated accessories for the DJI Osmo Action 3, including Waterproof Case, Adhesive Base Kit, Lens Protective Cover, 1.5m Extension Rod Kit, and Suction Cup Mount, among others.
DJI Osmo Action 3 users do not need to buy the Extreme Battery separately as it comes with it by default. According to DJI, the 1770mAh Extreme Battery can last up to 160 minutes of 1080p/30fps recording with EIS disabled and the screens off.
The DJI Osmo Action 3 is the first action camera to support fast charging. It supports PD 3.0, and the company claims it can charge from 0–80% in as little as 18 minutes and 0–100% in 50 minutes. The action camera can operate in temperatures as low as -20° C.
